More Than 20 Arrested In Apopka Drug Raids

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 – updated: 5:36 pm EDT September 3, 2008

The detective work took six weeks, but it only took one day to take down more than 20 suspected drug dealers in Apopka. The south side of Apopka was taken by storm with police on a mid-morning raid looking for street level drug dealers.

Police drove the streets, knocked on doors and tracked down each suspected dealer. One woman admitted to using, but denied dealing.

"I use, I say, I use, I use. That don't make me part of the crime," she said.

Police took thousands of dollars off the streets.

"That's not drug money, that's not drug money. It's my uh, uh back pay for my check," another suspect said.

Detectives seized a sawed off .22 and got a crack pipe out of a dog's mouth.

Wednesday sweep was the second in two months for Apopka police. They're calling it a success with nearly everyone on their hit list behind bars. But many of the suspects were arrested during the last sweep in July, bonded out and were apparently back at it.

One house raided Wednesday morning was in such deplorable condition that code enforcement condemned it and it will eventually be demolished. During July's sweep, police arrested 53 people.
