Tourist Corridor To Get Extra Police Patrols

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 – updated: 6:13 pm EST November 25, 2008

Businesses in the heart of Orlando's tourist corridor are so sick of crime they've banded together to pay for extra police patrols.

Starting Friday, they'll be kicking in an extra million dollars of their own tax money to pay for extra officers and deputies to watch over the area from Oak Ridge Road to the Premium Outlets off Vineland. (see map)

Security cameras at Yes Brazil caught two thieves as they drove a Mitsubishi Montero through the front of the store and took nearly $30,000 worth of goods. It was one of eight burglaries in the month of September.

Orlando police and Orange County sheriff's deputies patrol the area and both agencies say overall crime is down along International Drive but admit property crimes, thefts and robberies are on the increase.

"I've seen a couple (officers) here and there but we need more to keep the customers safe," said Ernest White, who manages an Adidas store in the area.

Business owners felt there was a need for more cops so now they they've hired five extra off-duty officers. The two agencies will be working together to provide the extra coverage. In January, the program increases the number to 10 officers.

The funds will come from the International Drive taxing district. Most business owners say it will be money well spent.

"I think any added is a good thing," said business owner Chris Bohr. "I don't care what the cost is, if it protects our consumers and gives them confidence."

Orange County says the agency will look at weekly crime statistics to determine exactly where along I-Drive the deputies and officers patrol.
