Orange County Commissioners To Vote On Possible Evans High Move

The Orange County Commission has a big decision ahead of it concerning the future of Evans High School. The district wants to build a new facility in a wooded area on North Apopka Vineland Road.

The proposed site is currently zoned rural which prevents construction. The district is petitioning to re-zone the area.

When Orange County commissioners meet Tuesday afternoon there will be a room full of people ready to voice their opinions about Evans High School and why they believe the campus should stay where it is.

A wooded area on North Apopka Vineland Road is where Orange County Public Schools wants to build the new Evans High, but people who live nearby say they don't want it there. They plan to remind county commissioners that the land is in a rural settlement, the third largest of 22 rural settlements in Orange County.

"If you're gonna put anything in a rural settlement, it has to keep with the character of the rural settlement. And when you look at it, rural means one thing," said resident Ed Misicka.

Property owners say building a high school in the middle of a rural settlement is against existing Florida land use policies and county ordinances, meaning the area would have to be rezoned. That's exactly what the school district is hoping commissioners will do Tuesday.

William Burrell sees it differently. The Pine Hills resident who lives near Evans High started a petition drive to keep the campus right where it is. His group thinks the school district should rebuild, just like Edgewater High School is in the process of doing.

"The school has been there for over 50 years. It's part of the Pine Hills community. It's almost the heart of the Pine Hills community," Burrell said.

County commissioners are in a predicament. Both sides most likely will appeal whatever decision they come up with. County commissioners will vote Tuesday at 3:30pm.
