PREVIOUSLY: Teacher Reportedly Knocked Out Child's TeethSEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- Channel 9 has been poring over documents, learning more about a Seminole County teacher charged with abusing autistic students. Parents, who raised a red flag about her years ago, say the school district turned its head and those parents are outraged.
Kathleen Garrett At a closed door meeting Thursday night, parents made several demands. They asked for an independent mental health counselor, cameras in the classroom, a two-way mirror, and that teacher's aides who were in the classroom with Garrett are transferred.
"I trusted the people that were supposed to take care of my son and they let me down," comments parent Lizbeth Ortiz.
Several parents say, at least five years ago, the school district knew about allegations against Kathleen Garrett. They say they took their complaints to the top levels of the Seminole County School District.
"Had we known about it sooner, we would have taken action sooner," said Richard Wells, Seminole County Schools, in response to the arrest.
That controversial statement angered parents whose children had Garrett as a teacher years before she was arrested for aggravated child abuse.
"We filed complaints, verbally and in writing," says parent Carol Goings.
Goings says she took abuse complaints all the way to the district's head of human resources, John Reichert.
"I talked to John Reichert. ... He said that he was investigating the incident. That's it," says Goings.
Soon after those complaints, Garrett was transferred from Indian Trails Middle School to South Seminole Middle School, where she's now accused of punching kids, sitting and laying on them and abusing them in a bathroom. One child lost two teeth, according to police.
What's the district's response to parents who ask, how could this have happened?
"Well, as soon as we heard about it, we contacted police on October 24, started our own investigation and suspended the teacher," says Wells.
Father Rich Hayward says Garrett abused his daughter four years ago. He's insulted by claims that the district didn't know.
"They're lying. Absolutely. Specifically, I'd like to know the administrators who are saying that," says Hayward.
The school district says they are investigating the claims of these parents and Casselberry police are also looking into Garrett's past.
