SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- Kathy Garrett's letter of resignation goes before the Seminole County School Board on Tuesday and the board is expected to accept it. Garrett is facing nine aggravated child abuse charges and dozens of irate parents who say her recent abuse of special education students is only the tip of the iceberg.Parents of students currently enrolled in Garrett’s special education class will be happy to hear the investigation is growing. According to the Seminole County School District, the investigation is expanding to include past complaints from five years ago and more at other schools Garrett worked at, such as Indian Trails Middle.
Parents fear what happened to Alex Baez may have happened to their child as well. According to a police report, Garrett locked the autistic and blind child in a closet for hours at South Seminole Middle School and hit him on the head. His mother says she wants everyone responsible to be held accountable.Four of Garrett's current and former teacher's aides were suspended with pay because they didn't report anything sooner.Garret turned in her letter of resignation Friday. However, it's unclear what effect that will have on her financial benefits. She's been with the Seminole County School District for 24 years, so she might be eligible for reduced retirement benefits.
