Professor Wrestling: The 'Turning Point' Recap

TNA Does PPV

Wednesday, December 6, 2006

Listen up!

Class is in session.

Total Nonstop Action had this week's pay-per-view (there seems to be one every week!), with Samoa Joe taking on Kurt Angle in a big rematch.

As for the rest of the card, here's my breakdown of what I think should happen, what will happen, and what did happen. Aren't you glad I'm here?

Bikini Match: Ms. Brooks vs. Eric Young
What Should Happen: Uh, I hope Brooks wins. Why bother with this junk, TNA?

What Will Happen: Something tells me this is a spot for the goof Young. He'll win whatever this ends up being.

What Did Happen: Young stripped down to a speedo, and the fans went more wild for him than the heel bombshell Brooks. Odd, yes. But I was right!

Flag Match: Latin American Exchange vs. America's Most Wanted
What Should Happen: It's the Mexican bad guys versus the American good guys (who were bad guys just a few weeks ago) in a match where the winner gets to sing their national anthem loud and proud. To win, you have to capture the other team's national flag. Yeah, I know. A bit dopey. But LAX is fantastic, so with these guys I can put up with a little cheese here and there. LAX manager Konnan continues to be the best mouthpiece in wrestling, on par with James Mitchell. What should happen? It's always more fun when the heels get booed by the crowd, especially when they're singing. Old schoolers will remember Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik chortling the Russian national anthem during their WWE heyday.

What Will Happen: I love the "The Star- Spangled Banner," but LAX will win.

What Did Happen: LAX won the match, and the crowd had to hear the Mexican national anthem.

Challenge Match: Rhino vs. A.J. Styles
What Should Happen: Styles continues his slow heel turn with his first match against Rhino. Not a bad match to have, really. Pretty inventive booking here. Rhino is a bit lumbering, but Styles could make him look great. If I'm writing the script, though, you have to have Styles win in a brutal fashion. Why turn a guy heel and have him lose?

What Will Happen: A.J. Styles will take it.

What Did Happen: Styles took it, in a dandy match.

X-Division Title Match: Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Chris Sabin
What Should Happen: I feel like I've seen this match 100 times, but you know what? These X-Division wrestlers are so good at what they do, it doesn't really bother me. As for what should happen, I'm kind of torn. Daniels is a fine babyface champion in this division, but I'd like for him to hang out with the heavyweights for some fresh matches.

What Will Happen: Daniels will retain.

What Did Happen: Daniels got the pin and the win.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Abyss (c) vs. Christian Cage vs. Sting
What Should Happen: This one pits three NWA champs from the past year against each other. Abyss won the belt from Sting in the last TNA PPV, so it's too early for him to drop it. He's worked hard enough to stay at the top for a bit. Besides, he has a great creepo manager in James Mitchell, who deserves more time in the primary spotlight. One could easily see Mitchell in WWE soon. He's has that harmless carny slime persona, which is pure fun.

What Will Happen: I'm sticking with Abyss as champ. He'll take it.

What Did Happen: Abyss retains to call himself the NWA champion for another day.

Challenge Match: Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe
What Should Happen: Angle won the first battle, with Joe tapping out. While that ended SJ's unbeaten streak, he still hasn't been pinned since being in TNA. Obviously, the smart move is to have Joe square the series so these two can have a rubber match down the road for the NWA title.

What Will Happen: Joe wins. Bet the mortgage.

What Did Happen: Angle tapped out, as Joe won in a fantastic match! Way to go TNA!

That's it. For the record, if you want to know exactly how a pay-per-view will turn out, just read this column. I was perfect this week, and don't you forget it.

Before the bell rings, one more item for your attention. If you haven't listened to the Professor Wrestling Podcast, "Old School, New School," you're probably going to flunk this class. This week in Episode 11, we hear from BG James of the TNA tag team Voodoo Kin Mafia. He's very candid about his new anti-WWE angle. He also talks about his time as a member of WWE's DX (Road Dogg) and rips his old pals Triple H and Shawn Michaels. It's pretty good stuff, kids, if I don't say so myself. That and much more can be heard RIGHT HERE.

That's it!

Now scram. Class dismissed!
