Listen up!Class is in session.I got a letter from a guy this week. A guy who was fed up with yours truly being down on World Wrestling Entertainment. I couldn't deny it. WWE has been terrible lately -- and has gone into a huge tailspin since the horrible Chris Benoit tragedy. What would I do if I were in charge? It comes down to six easy steps. I'm sure you'll agree with each and every one.
Go Small
First, Vince McMahon has to dump his notion that bigger is better when it comes to the WWE Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship. To have The Great Khali as champion right now is a complete travesty. This guy is big, sure, but he is perhaps the worst wrestler on planet Earth. And why does Bobby Lashley get a monster push? This guy can't wrestle -- and worse -- he can't talk. But he looks great. I guess that's all McMahon wants (or has ever wanted) in a major title contender. If it were up to me, I'd have a smaller guy hold the belt, and have the big monsters chase him. If a big doof is the champ, why should I believe he'll ever be beaten? Why invest my time?Ban Divas From Wrestling
Speaking of not being able to wrestle, pick any WWE Diva and you have a poster child of someone who shouldn't ever step in a ring. It's that bad. OK, there are a few who can do a bit of tumbling (Victoria and Mickie James), but not that many. It's time to shut it down, if you ask me. If I were in charge, Divas would be restricted to managing, interviewing and the occasional bikini contest. I'm not saying they shouldn't be seen. I'm not an idiot. But they shouldn't wrestle – because most of their matches are idiotic. Give that time to the men's cruiserweight division.Appreciate Cade And Murdoch
Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch are the World Tag Team Champions. That's a good first step to highlighting their talents. But as champions, they should have a lot more visibility -- and a lot more time on the mic. Murdoch, I feel, is a diamond in the rough -- a throwback to yesteryear. Murdoch isn't especially big, doesn't have a chiseled body and isn't exactly a ring genius. But he has that crazy redneck gimmick down perfectly -- something I haven't seen in long, long time. This team should be developed into WWE icons, and not fade into the background when their current push is over.Flip Cena
John Cena is Hulk Hogan. He doesn't do much in the ring. He always wins, and fans love him. I can't figure out why. He is vanilla is vanilla can be -- and I guess that's good for the marketers, but it's BORING. Cena can be entertaining on the microphone when he's inspired, and for me he did his finest work as a heel. He can still be champion. I'm all for keeping the belt on the same guy for a while, but he has lost his edge. Remember when Hulk Hogan went heel with the N.W.O. and it shocked the world? If I were in charge, I'd do that with Cena sometime soon just to spice things up a bit.Give Ric Flair Something Meaningful To Do
True, The Nature Boy is on Smackdown -- and that was a good switch to give him some new life away from RAW -- but now it's time to actually do something with him. In the past, I've always wanted Ric Flair to have one more championship run -- and then quickly retire to manager status, leading a new version of the Four Horsemen. Well, I'm willing to drop my demand that he get a title run -- but how about the manager part? Could we do that, at least? Flair is still the best in the business when it comes to talking -- so let him talk. Let him build a heel or a babyface stable, and see what happens. Use him wisely as long as you have him. To have Flair languish as a perpetual jobber isn't just a sad state of affairs, it's a crime.Listen To Our Podcast
This column also features a podcast. We've been doing it for the past 38 weeks, and I think it's a great little addition to this weekly lecture. I'm not going to lie to you. My co-hosts, historians Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire, are driven nuts by what WWE does week in, week out -- and they do complain about it. But if WWE would listen to their gripes, listen to their suggestions for change -- we might all be better off. Don't believe me? Then start by downloading the latest episode right here. There are a lot of wrestling podcasts out there -- knuckleheads who scream and swear and carry on. Not us. We're cool and calm, and we tell it like it is. I wouldn't waste your time if I didn't think it was good. That's it. Six easy ways for WWE to gain back some lost momentum.
