  • Fashion Sees Red At This Year's Oscars

Plenty Of Winners Walk Red Carpet

    POSTED: 10:58 pm EST February 24, 2008

If Oscar fashion sets any trend this year, expect to be seeing a lot of red. Bright scarlet appeared to be the favorite color among female stars and those who dressed them for the 80th Annual Academy Awards.

Most striking was Anne Hathaway, who presented one of the awards, in a long red Marchesa gown highlighted with rosette detail along the shoulder. Heidi Klum also wore red, a full-length Galliano gown. Klum had her Oscar dress picked out earlier than most of the other red carpet walkers. That's because the gown will be auctioned off through a Diet Coke sweepstakes as part of The Heart Truth, a national awareness campaign about women and heart disease.

Katherine Heigl, Helen Mirren, Miley Cyrus, and Ruby Dee, also wore red Sunday night for the festivities at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

Light colors were few and far between, with Cameron Diaz being one of those who chose pastel in a pale peach Christian Dior gown, and Keri Russell in a champagne-colored Nina Ricci strapless dress.

Jessica Alba, expecting her first child, wore a deep purple gown and another pregnant actress, Cate Blanchett, chose a midnight blue Dries van Noten gown.

Black was another favorite with Penelope Cruz in a striking dress highlighted with feathers. Tilda Swinton, who won for best supporting actress, also chose black in a Lanvin black gown. She wore no makeup and her short red hair was slicked back. Jennifer Garner's hair was almost as dark as her black Oscar de la Renta dress, which was accessorized with a 61-carat Van Cleef and Arpels diamonds necklace.

First time Oscar winner Marion Cotillard chose the other end of the color spectrum in a form-fitting cream beaded gown by Jean Paul Gaultier.

But the highlight of the evening was Nicole Kidman who chose a Balenciaga black gown, however the showstopping part of her ensemble were the dripping 7,645 diamonds in the sautoir necklace. The rough and polished diamond necklace was designed by L'Wren Scott and totaled 1,399 carats. Each diamond was individually selected by the designer and required more than 6,200 hours to handcraft.
