Goldberg Sends Well Wishes To Swayze

Oscar-Winner Says Actor Fought To Get Her Cast In 'Ghost'

POSTED: 9:24 am EST March 7, 2008

Whoopi Goldberg is sending good wishes to her "Ghost" co-star Patrick Swayze.

Goldberg said on "The View" Thursday that she hasn't been able to call Swayze since learning he has pancreatic cancer, but she said, "We want you to feel better and we'll talk soon."

Swayze's publicist and doctor confirmed Swayze's cancer battle Wednesday after the National Enquirer ran a story that the "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost" actor had the disease and had only five weeks to live. Dr. George Fisher said, however, he wasn't in as a dire condition as the report suggested.

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far," Fisher said in a statement.

Goldberg pointed out how Swayze is the only one she remembered to thank when she won her Oscar for "Ghost."

She said she wouldn't have won the role or the Oscar if Swayze hadn't insisted that she be hired to play Oda Mae Brown.

She said that that director didn't want her, but Swayze said he wouldn't be in the film if Goldberg wasn't.

Swayze, 55, has also starred in such films as "Road House" and "Next of Kin." He has been married to his wife, Lisa Niemi, since 1975.
