Professor Wrestling: 'Backlash' Results
As Predicted, Batista Retains
Thursday, April 28, 2005 – updated: 8:34 am EDT May 2, 2005
Listen up!Class is in session. The "Raw" roster was in pay-per-view mode this Sunday night. Let's check out what happened at "Backlash."Tag Team Title Match: The Heart Throbs vs. La Resistance vs. The Hurricane and Rosey vs. Simon Dean and Maven vs. William Regal and Tajiri.
What Should Happen: Here, four tag team challengers will try to win the belts from Regal and Tajiri, the current champs. What should happen? How about the Freebirds come on in and clear the ring? Or the Four Horsemen? Look at the names above. Look at them. Who are these guys? What happened to the "team" concept? I know most are OK workers in the ring, but are they worthy of your PPV attention? Why has Vince McMahon watered down one of the best acts in the circus? At least Regal and Tajiri are entertaining. They should retain.
What Will Happen: I have a sneaking suspicion the newbies -- The Heart Throbs (who are lamer than lame) -- will get the victory, and the belts. Ugh.
What Did Happen: I was close. A team only slightly less lame than The Heart Throbs won this match: Hurricane and Rosey. Why is the tag division the comedy club? TNA doesn't treat it like dirt, I wish WWE didn't.Intercontinental Championship Match: Chris Jericho vs. Shelton Benjamin
What Should Happen: I still like Jericho as a character over Benjamin, who is the better wrestler. I think Jericho needs a win and a title to keep fresh. Benjamin can lose here, and go on to better things. Like acting school. Sorry, Shelton, but you need work on the mic. That's what makes the show go.
What Will Happen: Jericho gets a clean pin for the win.
What Did Happen: Benjaim gets the clean pin for the wn.
Challenge Match: Kane (with Lita) vs. Viscera (with Trish Stratus)
What Should Happen: With any luck, this will be short. Both men just move too slowly in the ring. I'm not a big fan of the behemoth set. But I will say Viscera has done a great job with his angle as Trish Stratus' "protector." I never knew he had any acting ability. It's a nice surprise.
What Will Happen: Viscera takes it somehow, so he and Trish can continue their one-way romance. If he loses, that storyline ends before it begins.
What Did Happen: Kane wins with the big chokeslam. Trish yells at Viscera. End of storyline?
Last Man Standing Match: Edge vs. Chris Benoit
What Should Happen: This one could be great if booked right. Both men know how to tell a story in the ring, and should shine here. There's no reason for Benoit to lose since Edge has the guaranteed title match he won at "WrestleMania 21."What Will Happen: Benoit will be the last man standing.
What Did Happen: Edge takes a brick out of his suitcase, and clobbers Benoit with it. Edge wins.
Challenge Match: Muhammad Hassan and Daivari vs. Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan
What Should Happen: The Hulkster returns to the ring for "one last match" to take on the American-Arab heels. What should happen is a total squash of the bad guys, with Hogan getting the pin. That'll make the crowd feel good. But this "one last match" stuff is hooey.
What Will Happen: HBK and Terry B. will win, but there's no way Hogan will fade away. Look for the eventual feud between him and Michaels. Hassan, meanwhile, should probably move into some sort of title picture. He and Daivari are doing a nice job with their heel act.
What Did Happen: HBK and Hogan win, with Hulk getting the pin. Lots of posing afterwards.
World Heavyweight Championship match: Dave Batista vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley
What Should Happen: Here's an early test for Batista as champion. Do you care enough about his title run to order this pay-per-view? Is his character engaging enough for you to spend money to see him? I imagine fans would say "no" to both questions at this point, but he is getting better … especially on the mic. If I were booking things, he wouldn't have touched the belt until "SummerSlam." But since he has the title, you can't give it back to HHH this soon. In fact, Hunter needs to disappear for a bit. It would be great if Christian interfered somehow and got into the title mix. What Will Happen: Batista gets the pin, overcoming the usual distractions (Ric Flair, etc.).What Did Happen: Batista gets the pin, overcoming the usual distractions (Ric Flair, etc.) Huh, that sentence looks familiar. That's it. Only two for six this time around, but did you notice that I nailed the main events? I guess I have to quit letting Prof. Junior influence me on the undercard. Now get out of here. Class dismissed!(Professor Wrestling is a masked employee of Internet Broadcasting Systems. He really thinks a Christian/Edge title feud would be the best thing for the business.)
