Zellweger: 'Fraud' Not Reflection Of Chesney's Character

Thursday, September 15, 2005 – updated: 3:28 pm EDT September 16, 2005

Bridget Jones is untying the knot.

Renee Zellweger, who played the lovelorn Brit in "Bridget Jones's Diary," and country music star Kenny Chesney are calling it quits.

And now, Zellweger, who has filed for an annulment from Chesney after just four months of marriage, wants some privacy.

In court papers filed Wednesday, Zellweger listed "fraud" as the reason for the breakup -- but didn't elaborate.

Zellweger released a statement Friday saying that "fraud" was "simply legal language and not a reflection of Kenny's character."

"I would personally be very grateful for your support in refraining from drawing derogatory, hurtful, sensationalized or untrue conclusions," Zellweger said. "We hope to experience this transition as privately as possible."

In a statement released Friday by Chesney, the country music singer said, "This is an incredibly sad time. ... I just hope everyone can respect the privacy that I know Renee has already asked for."

The breakup brings to an end a whirlwind romance that began shortly before a surprise wedding in May.

Apparently it had been love at first sight when they met Jan. 15 at a benefit for tsunami victims. In May, they had a small, surprise wedding on the beach near Chesney's home in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In a statement released to "Access Hollywood" shortly after the wedding, Chesney said: "I am incredibly happy. I may well be the luckiest man alive … to be so in love with someone who is so perfect for me, it's just hard to imagine that I'm not going to wake up."

Zellweger is known for her roles in such films as "Jerry Maguire," "Bridget Jones's Diary" and "Chicago."

She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in "Cold Mountain" in 2004.

Chesney was named Country Music Association entertainer of the year in November, while his "When the Sun Goes Down" was named album of the year.

Zellweger is 36. Chesney is 37. It was the first time either of them had been married.
