Professor Wrestling: 'The Great American Bash' Recap

Rey Takes On Booker

POSTED: 12:30 am EDT July 21, 2006
UPDATED: 8:51 am EDT July 24, 2006

Listen up!

Class is in session.

"The Great American Bash" invaded Indianapolis Sunday night, as the WWE 'Smackdown" crew was in PPV mode.

As I do for every big show, I tell you what should happen (if I were in charge), what will happen (my guess of which way the writers will go) and what did happen (my powers of guessing is a talent few mortals possess, I admit, so try not to drool while basking in my greatness).

That being said, let us review the card:

Challenge Match: Batista vs. Mr. Kennedy
What Should Happen: Returning after a legit injury, Batista was supposed to take on Mark Henry in this one -- but the injured Henry just got tossed on the meatwagon himself. Kennedy steps in to fill out the show, but there's no way he should advance past Batista.

What Will Happen: Batista wins in a squash.

What Did Happen: Batista was on his way to a squash win, but got disqualified. Kennedy wins by DQ. Go figure.

Punjabi Prison Match: Undertaker vs. The Great Khali
What Should Happen: Khali took down UT in their last PPV meeting. Since this isn't WrestleMania (where he's undefeated), why not have Taker go down again? I think it should happen. UT can make this big goof look good, so why not do it and extend their rivalry?

What Will Happen: I like Khali in this one.

What Did Happen: Due to health reasons, Khali was replaced in the match by Big Show. Undertaker won.

WWE Tag Team Title Match: Paul London and Brian Kendrick (c) vs. Jamie Noble and Kid Kash
What Should Happen: It's funny how WWE is basically handing the tag team division over to cruiserweights. Not a bad idea at all, but I never thought I'd see the day when Vince would trust the littler guys with so much gold. Good for him. It's about time. As for this match, Noble and Kash -- who call themselves the Pitbulls -- should make a good showing here, and come close to winning. But that's it. London and Kendrick should retain, setting up a "SummerSlam" rematch where the Bulls can get the job done.

What Will Happen: London and Kendrick will keep their belts.

What Did Happen: The current champs retained in a pretty dandy match.

U.S. Title Match: Finlay (c) vs. Bobby Lashley vs. William Regal
What Should Happen: This three-way should be pretty fun to watch, especially if Finlay and Regal can carry the match. In the end, I'd put the belt on Regal. That opens up a Lashley/Booker T rivalry without a lesser belt on the line.

What Will Happen: Regal takes it.

What Did Happen: Due to health reasons, Lashley wasn't cleared to wrestle. In the end, Finlay beat Regal.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Rey Mysterio (c) vs. Booker T
What Should Happen: I just don't see Mysterio losing the belt before "SummerSlam," where I'm guessing he'll face Batista. It's good to see Booker get this shot, though. He's a main event guy, and should stay there.

What Will Happen: Queen Sharmell will try to interfere, and cost Booker T the gold.

What Did Happen: Chavo Guerrero turns on his old pal Rey, hitting him with a chair, costing him the match and the title. Shocker!

Well, sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield. Just one of five right in this one. But it's worth it to see gold around Booker T's waist. He's waited way too long for his moment in the WWE sun. I feel bad that Rey's reign was so short, but at least he had a chance.

Now scram!

Class dismissed!
