Course Description:This course that is being held concurrently with the I/ITSEC conference is intended for game designers, developers, and programmers interested in creating serious games. This course will provide the students with practical knowledge and skills necessary for serious games design and development, ranging from selecting appropriate training strategies and creating a serious game design concept to applying the latest programming techniques featuring the Unity3D engine to develop effective games for training. As part of the Serious Game Design and Development Boot Camp series, this course is brought to you by a strategic partnership between serious game industry experts Erudition Corporation and Design3. Course Duration: This is a 3-day course. The class will meet from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. each day.

Course Objectives: The students willGain an understanding of serious games and how they are used for training and educationDevelop practical knowledge and skills for serious games design in accordance with proven instructional strategiesDevelop the programming skills necessary to produce your own serious games using the latest development techniquesCreate a serious game design concept during the class and apply the newly acquired programming skills to produce a fully functional serious game Recognize the primary components of game and application development and indicate their sources.Construct a 3D scene using standard Unity tools and a collection of provided assets.Prepare for future serious game development projects and identify potential project needs.
Course Prerequisites:A basic understanding of computer programming, ideally, C++ and/or C# is strongly recommended in order to use the Unity tools.

Course Instructors:Dr. Anya Andrews is a Founder and President of Erudition Corporation, a learning innovation company located in Orlando, FL. Dr. Andrews holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology and is a true expert in the field of serious games and immersive learning simulations. She has led numerous innovative training efforts that have received international recognition. Dr. Andrews is a proud recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including Brandon-Hall Excellence in Learning, ELearning 100, and I/ITSEC Serious Games Showcase and Challenge. In addition to her work at Erudition, Dr. Andrews holds an academic appointment as a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Central Florida, Institute for Simulation and Training.Michael Guerrero is a game industry transplant who has spent the last 6 years lending his talents to the design and implementation of serious games. He has published and presented innovative character animation techniques at I/ITSEC and won the best paper award at AIIDE. In addition, he has contributed to publications in the PSI Handbook of Virtual Environments for Training and Education and an upcoming book on the Design of Learning Games. Michael holds a B.S in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara and an M.S. in Interactive Technology from Southern Methodist University (SMU). He is currently employed as a programmer for the MOVES (Modeling, Virtual Environment, and Simulations) Institute in Monterey, CA.

Prior to attending the course, please download and play with the free version of Unity available from Unity3d.com to become familiar with the engine. .
