Fantasy of Flight's Veterans Day Salute takes place Saturday, Nov. 10 and Sunday, Nov. 11, from 10:00am until 5:00pm.
Fantasy of Flight is home to the World’s Greatest Aircraft Collection with over 40 rare and vintage aircraft on display. Fantasy of Flight is located off I4 at Exit 44 mid-way between Orlando and Tampa. 1400 Broadway Blvd., S.E., Polk City, Fla. 33868.
“Veterans Day Salute: A Celebration of Service” is an encore presentation of Fantasy of Flight’s Legends & Legacies Symposium Series. Four veterans of World War II and Vietnam will share their personal stories, in open forum/question-and-answer sessions, followed by meet-and-greet/autograph signing sessions.
Vintage military aircraft that flew in these conflicts will make rare flight demonstrations, including the North American P-51C and P-51D, North American AT-6, Grumman Wildcat and Grumman Duck, and will later be on display for guests to admire as part of the weekend.
The event features open-forum/question-and-answer sessions with distinguished panelists from Polk County, Clearwater/Tampa and other areas:
Saturday, Nov. 10 – WWII veterans:
Sgt. Virgil Myers – veteran who fought in D-Day and had 210 days of continual front line infantry combat time as a sergeant responsible for the Mortar Section.
Sgt. Teddy Fisk – member of the U.S. Army Air Corps/Air Force ground service unit who helped build fighter bases just behind the advancing infantry divisions and who also fought in D-Day.
Sunday, Nov. 11 – Vietnam veterans:
Lt. Col. Morris Schallenberger – served on night missions with the 245th Surveillance Airplane Company that were directed to spot enemy convoys and alert U.S. air and ground troops.
Retired Air Force veteran Rick Julian – military dog trainer who retired after a 25-year career that included an assignment at Vietnam’s Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, where he was kennel master for the largest military dog section in the world.
Also scheduled to appear during the weekend is Donaldean “Donna” Hooker, an original Rosie the Riveter who will present live riveting demonstrations.
