In the 1930s, work began on a canal that would cut through the Florida peninsula. Learn about the heated debate behind this decision, the battle fought by environmentalists and developers, and the final halt to construction in 1971. Find out why this project is still controversial today. Steven Noll, Ph.D., teaches American history, Florida history, and the history of disability at the University of Florida, where he also received his doctorate. David Tegeder, Ph.D., is a professor of American history at Santa Fe College in Gainesville. He also earned his doctorate from Florida. Their book received the Rembert Patrick Award in 2010 for the Best Scholarly Book on Florida History and the Michael Thomason Award in 2010 for the Best Book in Gulf South History. 1- 2:30 p.m.; followed by book signing.
