The Most Unique Half Marathon Course in the World
The course for the Daytona Beach Half Marathon is already one of the most unique half marathons in the world and has been named one of the 7 most scenic courses by Active.com, but this year, we have added a new twist.
The roots of the Daytona 500 can be traced back to 1903 when car lovers decided that the level, hard packed sands of Ormond Beach would be a perfect place to see how fast a car could run. From there, beach racing in the Daytona Beach area was a hit and in 1959 the first Daytona 500 was run at the Daytona Beach Motor Speedway. This year the Daytona Beach Half Marathon will embrace that history and give runners the opportunity to run on the same area that historic race cars graced years ago. At the approximate 7.1 mile mark, runners will enter the beach and run on a large mat that will cover the wide running surface for 1/10th of a mile before returning to the roads of Daytona Beach. This allows runners to have an unobstructed view of the ocean as the sun rises on the beautiful horizon. In addition, runners will be able to stop and take pictures alongside antique race cars with the "World's Most Famous Beach" as the backdrop.
It’s All About the Bling
Check out the 2013 Daytona Beach Half Marathon medal, complete with banked corners that emulate the turns at the Daytona International Speedway, granulated paint that really looks like the track asphalt and of course the checkered flags! All runners will also receive a race-themed tech shirt and two tickets to the Daytona 500 Qualifying presented by Kroger.
