Local animal rescue group Pet Rescue by Judy (PRBJ) will be holding a Welcome Home Party for Rufus the dog on Saturday, May 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Shipyard Brew Pub in Winter Park.
The one-year-old Beagle was recently the center of much controversy when he was confiscated by Orange County Animal Services after biting his owner’s four-year-old son. Although owner Nikki West explained that the incident occurred because her child had startled Rufus while he was eating, he was labeled a danger- ous dog and scheduled to be euthanized. PRBJ offered to take Rufus so he wouldn’t be destroyed, but after hiring a lawyer and launching a national Facebook campaign, West was able to successfully fight for Rufus’ freedom. With assistance from The Lexus Project, local attorney Dawn Berlanga-Helms and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, Rufus’ case was reviewed and he was returned to the West family.
“Shelters are overflowing with animals that nobody wants, and here this family was fighting to get their dog back,” says Judy Sarullo, founder of PRBJ. “I’m just thankful that there was a happy ending for Rufus.”
The now-famous dog and his family will be in attendance at the celebration, which will feature food and drinks, a silent auction, photo opportunities with Rufus, an awards ceremony and giveaways, including goodie bags for the first 50 attendees. Shipyard Brew Pub is located at 200 W. Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park.
