Fitness can be fun! That’s the idea behind Volusia County’s newest program – Camp Fun & Fit, a summer camp designed for children ages 8 through 12.
The weeklong camps will debut at four schools in July:
“The camps will give kids a chance to learn about healthy choices while having fun,” said Nancy Maddox, activity project manager for the county’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division.
Campers will eat healthy foods, play active games, and develop healthy habits. They’ll take field trips to Publix, a farmers market, the Volusia County Agricultural Center and Bethune-Cookman University’s culinary arts center. Fitness activities will include kickboxing, bowling, and a scaled-down version of the Junior Olympics.
The fee, which is $65 a week plus a one-time $15 registration fee, includes field trips, a T-shirt, breakfast and lunch. To learn more about the camps, visit www.volusia.org/camp-fun or call Nancy Maddox at 386-736-5953.
Camp scholarships are available to income-eligible children through Volusia County’s Community Assistance Division. Applications are available at all Volusia County public library branches and online at www.volusia.org/camp-fun. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is June 12.
For more information about the scholarships, call 386-736-5956, ext. 12980; or 386-254-4648, ext. 12980.
The camps will be coordinated by Volusia County’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division. Sponsors include the Volusia County Health Department, Halifax Health, Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, the Women’s Initiative of United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties, and the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension.
