How about throwing a summer block party complete with lemonade, corn-on-the cob, hot dogs, apple pie and fun and games?!
Since Independence Day falls on a Thursday this year, many people are taking Friday, the 5th of July off too. This gives you reason to celebrate it with your neighbors by having an old-fashioned, patriotic block party.
Not only is it a great way to get to know your neighbors, you can also make treasured memories for the kids and foster a sense of community for everyone.
If you are fortunate to have young kids in your neighborhood, consider adding a parade complete with decorated wagons, bicycles and homemade instruments. You can also include old fashioned games such as tug of war, flashlight tag, sack races, water balloon games or a scavenger hunt.
To get things started, here are 4 tips that will make your block party successful:
1.Begin by appointing a coordinator who can collect email addresses and delegate the work.
2. Print out flyers and pass them out with a list of items to bring and jobs that need to be done in order to insure an safe and fun party. Don't forget to have a sign up for clean up so that one family doesn't get stuck with all the work at the end.
3. Is it best to set up the party in one area of your neighborhood. Decide if you want a potluck party or assign everyone a dish to bring. Find out if you will need a special permit from your city and/or homeowners association, especially if you plan to block off the street.
4. Decorate in style with inexpensive items from the dollar store. You can also search Pinterest for great ideas for patriotic themed food, drinks and decorations. Here is a link to my Pinterest Board for some patriotic "pin-spiration!"
Make this a party to remember and celebrate all that is good about America.
