Boston College men's basketball coach Steve Donahue secured his first verbal commitment for 2014 in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ point guard Matt Farrell. The 6-foot-1, 170 pound guard from New Jersey held scholarship offers from more than 20 schools including Boston University, Dartmouth, Davidson, Monmouth and William & Mary.
Farrell chooses the Eagles over Dartmouth and Monmouth, the other finalists for his services.
"Matt is a highly skilled point guard who can shoot it and has a great feel for the game," Point Pleasant Beach coach Nick Catania told SNY.tv. "He is super quick with the ball and makes his teammates around him better.
"However, the reason he will succeed at Boston College is because of his competitive spirit. He hates to lose."
Last season, Farrell averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, 4.2 steals and 3.0 rebounds a game en route to Point Pleasant's first state title in school history. He added 23 points, 8 assists and 5 re
Farrell is the first commit in the 2014 class and could be a big one, depending on whether reigning ACC Rookie of the Year Olivier Hanlan returns for his junior season.
Donahue was also in pursuit of Farrell's Point Pleasant teammate, three-star power forward Dominique Uhl. Though Uhl visited Boston College back in September, the 6-foot-7, transfer from Germany verbally committed to play at Iowa last week.
