Chiefs Gonna Chief -- We talked about he possibility of Eric Fisher going over Luke Joeckel for the first overall pick. Where is Fisher the better player? Well, the experts will tell you he is more athletic and plays more nasty than Joeckel. Whatever. The fact is they choose a MAC player who has played the majority of his career against MAC competition over an Outland trophy winner and a player who has dominated two different conferences from the left tackle position. The Chiefs are basically playing the hipster role, making a hipster draft pick.
KHANNNNNNNNN -- Meanwhile, in Jacksonville, the Jaguars have to be ecstatic that they were basically given the first overall draft pick by the Chiefs. The Jaguars have a new owner, a new general manager, a new head coach, even new horrible uniforms. Now they have a franchise player in Luke Joeckel they can build the franchise around. Luke will probably start off at right tackle instead of left since they already have a decent left tackle in Eugene Monroe. Plus, the bright side for Luke is that he will actually earn more than Eric Fisher will since there is no state income tax in Florida. And Jacksonville is such a better city than Kansas City to live in. Maybe. It's a toss up. Of hell holes in America.
Moore, Swope, Michael on deck -- Day 2 of the NFL Draft will be a little more suspenseful for Aggies fans as they could see three, maybe even four players chosen over the next two rounds. Damontre Moore stayed on the board and fell out of the 1st round as many projected. Now how long will he stay up there before a team selects him? I have him lasting until the middle of the second round at least. Christine Michael could slip into the late second, but no running backs taken in the 1st round will hurt his position as many have Eddie Lacy, UCLA's Jonathan Franklin, and UNC's Giovani Bernard as players ranked ahead of him. Likewise for Swope, only three receivers were selected in last night's first round and 5-6 players are believed to be ranked ahead of him at the position. I wouldn't be surprised to see a run skill position players early in the 2nd.
Texans get their man, Cowboys are lost -- Now it's time to look at what teams in the state did. The Texans were very fortunate to have their draft board fall perfectly to them to be able to select any WR they wanted on the board minus Tavon Austin. They choose Clemson's DeAndre Hopkins who put up massive numbers for the Tigers last season when Sammy Watkins was injured to start the season. The Cowboys on the other hand.......well, at least they filled a position of need. They did the smart thing to trade down, accumulate more draft picks to be able to select the guy they targeted. However, they didn't get equal trade value back (only a 3rd from San Francisco when they have like 13 total picks this year?). Then to select a 3rd round player, someone you probably could have selected in the second round? Hey, if this stabilizes their offensive line this is a great pick. But to leave players like Sharrif Floyd at defensive tackle and Matt Elam a safety on the board....makes you scratch your head to say the least.
