Welcome back Tech fans! Hope everyone’s summer travels are not completely over yet and everyone had an enjoyable break. In hopes of keeping everyone updated on the monthly news, this new segment will keep everyone in the loop. From the recruiting front, to the football season, to even spring sports updates, Tech fans will be able to be part of the action each month with our newest segment "Buzzin' By". Coming every 1st of the month, I will give a previous month wrap up as well as update fans on what to expect for the upcoming month.
Lets get started!
For those of you relaxing on a beach (or sitting in a cubicle), July was a very eventful month for Yellow Jacket’s Football recruiting. The team currently has 14 recruits for the 2014 class and I expect us to have another few coming within the next few days to the next week. I will wait until things die down a bit to get a Recruiting Update together, but for now know that the Yellow Jackets are nowhere close to done.
Basketball teams have begun summer training. Follow Coach Brian Gregory here on twitter here for more updates from the Men’s team. So far, the team looks great and the freshmen are on track to be some great contributors this season. Players are healing well and it sounds like the Jackets will be very strong this season.
Many of you saw already, but Trae Golden from University of Tennessee has become the Jacket’s most recent transfer, along with Robert Sampson from East Carolina. With these two additions to the squad, I feel much more confident about the season ahead and think that Gregory has a great chance to make some noise in the always competitive ACC conference.
This additions are important, because the Ballin’ Jackets recently strengthened their OOC schedule that many critiqued the Jackets of last season. They announced recently that they will be taking on Illinois, Charlotte, Vanderbilt, Georgia and Gregory’s previous school, Dayton.
The women’s basketball team recently promoted Catherine Green to director of basketball operations, Ricky Kersey to assistant director of basketball operations, and former Jacket Metra Walthour as a graduate manager.
6 of the Jackets golf team worked to qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, and all 6 qualified. These players include Anders Albertson, Seth Reeves, Ollie Schniederjans, Bo Andrews, Richard Werenski, and Michael Hines. The tournament will be held at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Aug. 12-18, 2013. Tech stars to win this amateur title include Matt Kuchar in 1997 and Bobby Jones four times in 1924, 1925, 1927 and 1930.
13 of the Yellow Jackets played in notable Summer Leagues over the past few months. Here is a recap of their performance.
Cruz and Spingola represented the Western Division in the NECL All-Star Game.
ACC Media days have come and gone. The Yellow Jackets have had voluntary workouts in the month of July in preparation for camp later this week. The Jackets have seen their fair share of "Award Watch Lists". Below is a synopsis of them.
Now onto the month of August.
What everyone has been waiting for since January 1, team workouts will begin Today, August 1st. Georgia Tech fan days are schedule for Friday, August 3rd at 3pm, where fans can go and meet the players, coaches and staff and get pictures and autographs with everyone Here are more details to the event. CPJ and players will begin signing autographs around 4:30pm.
The Yellow Jackets will be celebrating Grant Field’s 100th Anniversary this entire season so expect this to be a lot of fun.
The first game, Elon, is scheduled for August 31st at 12pm at Bobby Dodd Stadium. This game is followed by a bye week.
You can access the schedule for the season here.
As I said earlier, I expect the Jackets to see a few other commits very soon, within the next week. FTRS will try to keep everyone as updated as possible with the latest news as soon as we hear them.
The Lady Jackets will begin their season with the Gold v. White Scrimage at O’Keefe Gymnasium on August 24th. This is followed by the Georgia Tech Invitational against Florida A&M;, UT-Chattanooga, and College of Charleston from Aug. 30-Sept. 1 at O’Keefe Gymnasium.Last but not least, school starts back on August 20th. For those of you taking a serious load, good luck.
