By The Ghost of Jay Cutler
The No. 18 Rebels face the No. 16 Bulldogs tonight in a game which won't count in the SEC record, but will count for the sake of bragging rights - ah "bragging rights," the most meaningless yet fun aspect of sports fandom. The game begins at 6:30 PM, and will probably be broadcast on some local television station. I dunno. Look it up.
Ole Miss will pitch Josh Laxer, who has a 2.45 ERA, 11 walks, 12 strikeouts, and 25.2 innings under his belt so far this year. State will pitch sophomore righty Brandon Woodruff, who has a 4.15 ERA, eight earned runs, nine walks, and 16 strikeouts in just 17.1 innings over six appearances.
Rebel baseball is in a bit of a tailspin right now. After rising to a top-10 team after a series win against Arkansas in Fayetteville, the Rebs have dropped three straight series, the most recent of which was a sweep at the hand of the Vanderbilt Commodores. This leads me to believe that the Rebels will somehow win this game, you know, because it counts for nothing of significance, only to continue to struggle against SEC teams in SEC play. That's all I can really expect based on what we've seen thus far.
That said, this does not mean that we at the Cup are unexcited about Rebel baseball. Au contraire! We're just not all that optimistic right now.
