The Pitt football got back to work for the 2013 football season after taking the day off on Monday. Pitt will be practicing twice today, but the night session will be closed to the media. There were a few players returning from injuries, and some new players exiting with ones. There is also nothing new on the Todd Thomas front. We are still three weeks away from the first game, and plenty will be resolved in the coming weeks.
According to Sam Werner's practice report, the big story could be the running back situation. Bennett apparently sustained a knee injury on Saturday, but may be a bit more severe than originally thought. Bennett is the only back in the stable that has some serious game experience, so losing him for any amount of time would be problematic. James Conner has been one of the hot freshmen on the team, and would likely be the starter in his place.
Another key player mentioned by Werner that was out of practice was defensive end, Bryan Murphy. He is pretty much locked into the one end spot, but it allowed for Shakir Soto and Jack Lippert to get some reps with first unit.
Another good thing of note was the return of the brother linebackers, Bam Bradley and Nicholas Grigsby. They were out in Ohio for a family funeral, but both have the option to compete for a starting job, especially with the absence of Todd Thomas.
The lack of news on the quarterback front still concerns me, as the papers have not made it much of a focal point. Coach Paul Chryst even went so far as to call the passing game "sporadic." So obviously that is troubling, but it is encouraging to see some players show some confidence.
They're not doubting Tommy Savage, are they?! They must not know haha— Dontez DaVaughn Ford (@D12Ford) August 13, 2013
