Surgery-Free Back Treatment

Posted: 12:10 pm EDT July 6, 2007

BACK PAIN: Each year, 50 billion dollars is spent to treat back pain. Nine out of 10 adults will suffer from back pain at least once in their lifetime. There are a lot of reasons one can suffer from back pain, but often it can be caused by disc problems in the spine. Now, medical doctors and chiropractors are helping patients find relief from back and neck pain with the DRX9000.

DRX9000: The DRX9000 is a machine that uses state-of-the-art technology to relieve back and neck pain. The treatment is done by gradually relieving neurocompression, which is often associated with neck and back pain. The process involves enlarging the disc space, reducing herniation, and strengthening outer ligaments to help move herniated areas back into place and reversing intradiscal pressures through application of negative pressure. The technology is so precise, doctors can pinpoint the area to treat. Essentially, the bones of the spine are slowly and methodically separated at the patient lies on the machine. By adjusting the angle and pressure, doctors can target the specific problem area instead of pulling the entire spine.

SUCCESS RATE: One study showed the DRX9000 relieves pain in 86 percent of patients. Luis Crespo, M.D., in Tampa, Fla., says the success rate depends on patient selection. He says his success rate is 96 percent. He recommends patients look for a physician who understands spine anatomy. He says talk to the patients who have had the treatment at that particular facility. Dr. Crespo says the machine is only as good at the person running it and, therefore, patients need to do their homework if they are interested in trying this treatment. He adds not everyone is a candidate for this treatment. He says only patients who have neck or back pain from a disc problem or facet joint are prime candidates.

COST: The DRX9000 is FDA cleared. Treatments are generally done three to five times a week for 20 treatments. A complete session can range from $3,500 to $6,500. Some insurance companies will cover the cost, but many do not. Dr. Crespo says right now most of his patients pay for the treatment out of pocket because it is so effective, and there are no negative side effects.
