Heat-related Illnesses

Heat Cramps
Symptoms:
Painful spasms in leg and abdominal muscles
Excessive sweating

Treatment:
Firm pressure on cramping muscles
Gentle massage to relieve spasm
Sips of water unless nauseated

Heat Exhaustion
Symptoms:
Heavy sweating
Weakness
Cold skin
Skin pale and clammy
Weak pulse
Fainting
Vomiting

Treatment:
Fan victim or move him/her into air-conditioning
Loosen clothing
Apply cool, wet cloths
Sips of water unless nauseated
Seek medical attention if victim begins vomiting

Heat Stroke
Symptoms:
Body temperature above 106 degrees
Skin hot and dry
Rapid, strong pulse
Possible unconsciousness
No sweating

Treatment:
Call 9-1-1 and get victim to a hospital immediately
Move victim to a cooler environment
Use fans and/or air conditioners
Cool bath or sponging to reduce body temperature
DO NOT GIVE FLUIDS
