Cities Smile Atop Best Teeth Lists

Madison, Lubbock Open Wide Gap

If you're looking for cavity-free pearly whites, search anywhere but Lubbock, Texas. But you might find some great smiles in Madison, Wis.

A study in the April issue of Men's Health magazine said Lubbock has the worst teeth of the 100 large U.S. cities examined. Madison's chompers came out on top.

The study used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on number of annual dentist visits, canceled appointments, regular flossers and households using fluoride.

Following Madison in the top 10 are:

3. Raleigh, N.C.
4. St. Paul, Minn.
5. Auroro, Colo.
6. Charlotte, N.C.
7. Yonkers, N.Y.
8. Grand Rapids, Mich.
9. Fargo, N.D.
10. Minneapolis

At the bottom of the list, along with Lubbock are

99. Philadelphia
98. Spokane, Wash.
97. Salt Lake City
96. Jackson, Miss.
95. El Paso, Texas
94. Portland, Ore.
93. Tulsa, Okla.
92. Tucson, Ariz.
91. Baton Rouge, La.

Several Texas cities placed near the bottom of the rankings. San Antonio and Dallas came in at 89 and 87, respectively.

The study also looked at oral hygiene routines to see who shined.

Freemont, Calif, had the best flossers, St. Paul was also No. 1 in visiting the dentist and Madison also led with the fewest number of extractions of permanent teeth.
