Tuesday, April 8, 2003 – updated: 4:53 pm EDT April 8, 2003

So far there have been no confirmed cases of SARS in Florida, but people here are concerned because of all the tourists from around the world that visit Central Florida. The Orange County Health Department has set up a new hotline to help answer your questions about SARS.

Because our area gets so many visitors, the Orange County Health Department expects a lot of calls of concern. So health experts are taking a proactive stance to get the latest information to people. The citizen's hotline is up and running.

It will have up to date details on SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, through the Centers for Disease Control. The top epidemiologist says the county is already getting 20-30 calls a day from people wanting info on signs and symptoms of SARS and how to protect themselves.

If a case is confirmed in Central Florida, then the hotline will become a fully-staffed information line. So far, there have been no confirmed cases of the virus in our area or in Florida.

The Orange County SARS information hotline number is 407-836-9053.

The key is, if you've traveled lately to China, Hong Kong or Canada, or if you've come in contact with someone who has. Symptoms are similar to the flu, but it starts with a high fever above 104 degrees, body and head aches. A dry cough and trouble breathing are other signs.
