VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- The Volusia County Health Department is offering free flu shots for infants and toddlers. The shots will continue until all the vaccine is gone. Monday, parents flocked to the closest county nurse for some insurance against the flu.
Many of the people who came to get in on the last of Volusia County's flu shots were turned away Friday, many because their children were too young to get that version of the vaccine. But Monday, the county made sure everyone is covered. There were no lines around the corner or anxious crowds pushing to get a flu shot Monday morning. Instead, dozens of Volusia County parents pushed strollers to the nearest clinic to get a bit of security."It gives me a little more confidence when she goes to school that she won't get the flu. With all the tragedies out west, it's kind of scary," says local mother Lara Hayes.Reports of children out west dying because of the flu has created a demand like no other for the infant vaccine."[We've had] a response like we've never seen before. We have never seen parents clamoring to get a flu shot and that's why it's in short supply right now. Because there's never been a demand and, when there's no demand, they don't make a supply," explains Volusia County Director of Nurses Patrick Johnson. Each of Volusia County's three health clinics had 100 doses and each expected to run out by noon."He's been sick a lot this year and I don't want to take any chances," says local mother Michelle Spicer. For that reason, Volusia County's health department has enough of the infant flu shot to go around, for one dose. But infants usually need a second dose for full protection.Still, health officials and parents say one is better than none. The infant flu shots will be available at the Daytona Beach clinic on Mondays from 8:30 until 11:00 in the morning and Tuesdays from 1:00 until 3:30 in the afternoon. You can also get the infant vaccine at the New Smyrna Beach and DeLand clinics on Mondays from 8:00 to 10:30 in the morning.
