RALEIGH, N.C. -- The beginning of a new year is always a good time to set goals that could lead to a happier and healthier life, reported WRAL-TV in Raleigh. Here are 10 tips to help you reach your health goals.
- Get vaccinated. About 40 percent of adults who should get the flu vaccine do not and about half of all adults are not up to date on tetanus shots.Exercise. Walking, jogging, biking or swimming are popular ways to get the heart pumping. Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day for five days a week will strengthen the heart and bones.Don't smoke. Lighting up is the No. 1 health menace, causing cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart attacks and strokes.Take care of your teeth. Research shows that there is a close correlation between heart disease and gum disease. See your dentist at least once a year.Cut stress. It contributes to plaque buildup in the coronary arteries. Relax. Exercise is a great stress reducer.Avoid accidents. Wear seat belts and, if riding a bicycle or skating, wear helmets. Wear protective eyewear when playing contact sports. And never swim alone.Eat less. Almost 65 percent of Americans are overweight. Keep a daily food diary to help you recognize situations and times of the day when you're most vulnerable to overeating. Begin to cut calories by eating more frequent meals with smaller portions. Limit fried foods and salt, and eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.Check your eyes. Get an annual eye exam, especially if you are over 40.Know your numbers. See your doctor on your birthday to check blood pressure, vital signs and blood sugar. Birthdays are also a good time to think about mammograms and prostate checks. Be sure to review the results with your doctor.Take an aspirin. A single 81 milligram tablet has been shown to help men reduce heart attacks. It has not been shown to do the same for women age 65 or older. Check with your doctor to see if a daily aspirin regimen is right for you.
