ORLANDO, Fla. -- Florida seniors say getting prescription drugs is harder than ever before. Confused by Medicare's prescription plan, some seniors are getting their drugs from other countries. Late Monday morning, Senator Bill Nelson said they should be able to.
Senator Nelson said his office has received dozens of complaints from Florida seniors whose medication has been seized by U.S. Customs as it comes across the border. The senator said that is inappropriate, even if the drugs are technically illegal.Senator Nelson said Florida is becoming a proving ground for the new Medicare prescription plan. He believes the controversial drug benefits plan may have something to do with seizures of packages being mailed from Canada.Canadian drugs have become very popular with senior citizens in Florida who are trying to save what little money they have in retirement. Nelson said Monday that the seizures should not be happening. Even though buying Canadian drugs is not legal, he feels the FDA agreed to have leniency. The senator is returning to Washington on Monday and said, at the top of his list of things to do is determining whether the seizure of Canadian drugs is an attempt to force senior citizens to use the controversial Medicare Plan D.
