Polk County
You are well known in the scientific hurricane community as being the county that saw the eyes of all three hurricanes pass overhead in 2004. In fact, Lake Wales has the singular distinction of having three hurricane eyes move right through town all in the same season. As far as we know, this phenomenon has never been observed elsewhere in the world! You are most prone to hurricane wind damage and tornadoes from storms coming in from the Gulf. Remember, hurricanes that move in from the Gulf usually bring more tornadoes to the state than hurricanes that come in from the Atlantic. Also, expect to have "guests" from the Gulf coast should a storm bring evacuation orders for coastal residents.WEATHER LINKS
