Sumter County got a close brush from Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 as Jeanne passed only 15 miles west of Bushnell. Frances also made a close call and missed by about 25 miles to the south. You're most at risk from Gulf of Mexico tropical systems and from the tornadoes that can accompany them. If you live in a low lying area or in a mobile home, you should check with your county's emergency management to find more sturdy shelter during a storm.
