The candy bar wasn't the only one covered with insects bought at the Chevron gas station at Marks Street and Mills Avenue near downtown Orlando. If they find problems, the owner could be forced to stop selling candy.Kaley Pitman went to the Chevron gas station to get her chocolate fix last week. Instead, she said she got bugs in her Hershey's bar."I got sick to my stomach and thought it can't be just one candy bar," she explained.Pitman took her digital camera and started recording as she went back into the store and bought the entire box of Hershey's with Almonds. When she opened them, one by one, she found more problems."All of them had maggots in them," she said.
Pitman said the candy bars were three months over the expiration date and said the clerk didn't believe her and refused to refund her money, until she showed him her video. When Eyewitness News confronted the store clerk, he said he hired an exterminator."Insect killer. We have a contract with them. They come, kill insects," he said.He also said he removed the outdated candy. Eyewitness News did find some of the shelves empty and a pile of outdated food behind the counter.Eyewitness News asked Pitman about her motives. She admitted she called a lawyer, but said her real goal is to protect others."I hope nobody else goes back to the store and buys candy that is contaminated," she said.Eyewitness News called Hershey's and was told the problems usually happen during distribution or storage, when the candy is out of their control. If the inspectors find multiple problems inside the store, the owner could be fined up to $5,000.Florida's Department of Agriculture regulates 50,000 stores. It is not against the law to sell candy beyond the expiration date, but it is against the law to sell milk, dairy products and oysters beyond the sell date.Eyewitness News also called the store's distributer. He said the store has had an infestation problem for the last year.
