The suspect had been driving erratically near Waco Boulevard and Babcock Street (see map). The ensuing chase ended at the Sunset Trace Apartments (see map) in an apartment's attic.

Eyewitnesses pointed police in direction of Apartment 402. The suspect hid in the attic for about a half an hour, took off all of his clothes, except for his boxer shorts, and the only way he was going to come out was by force.

"Trying to get home to my kids," Martinello Williams III told Eyewitness News as he was taken into custody.

It took a canister of pepper spray and the Melbourne SWAT team to force Williams out of the apartment he was hiding in. Police said the 22-year-old Palm Bay man was first spotted driving his maroon Cadillac recklessly by Palm Bay police officers.

Police broke off from a short pursuit, but then, they said, Williams crashed into a car at Malabar and Palm Bay road at a red light and tried to ram several other cars. Then, investigators said, he tried to ram two police cruiser and the pursuit was back on.

"He was forcing people off the road, cutting in front of people, intentionally trying to ram him. We had no choice but to continue and try to stop him," said Corporal Jeff Kraynick.

After Williams crashed into a dumpster at the Sunset Trace Apartments, he took off on foot. A Palm Bay police officer was injured chasing Williams, but told his colleagues who to be looking for and they followed him into an apartment.

Police said they knew from insulation and dry wall material on the ground that Williams was hiding in the attic. While he was hiding inside, a police dog found a bag filled with two pounds of marijuana in another car out front. Police said Williams gave that bag to a man at the complex to hide.

After releasing a can of pepper spray, the Melbourne SWAT team went in and brought him out. In the attic, they found a second bag with more marijuana and a 40-caliber handgun.

Palm Bay police said they coincidentally arrested Williams one year ago to the day for another fleeing and eluding charge. He was on probation for that charge when he was arrested Thursday.
