DELTONA, Fla. -- The spokeswoman for the city of Deltona was reprimanded after using a derogatory word in the title of a skit she wrote.
It was supposed to be a joyous celebration, Deltona's 10-year anniversary party, a memorable occasion. But now it will probably be remembered for other reasons. It's a day that will live in infamy, for some Deltonans, at least. Some say a skit during media day turned racist.
The new mayor was there."It was something, I don't believe she had political correctness in mind," said Mayor Dennis Mulder.According to witnesses, public information officer Janine Gage introduced a skit that pitted Caucasian council members against Hispanic members in a mud wrestling match. The title was "Hicks Versus Spics.""It's a term that should never be used, certainly not in government," said resident Carla Lovejoy. Some residents thought it was a lot worse than that. At a council meeting earlier this week, some Hispanic residents called for Gage's job.Gage would not talk to Channel 9 on camera. She was sent a letter of reprimand, but will not loose her job. The mayor said he doesn't believe she meant malice."I happen to believe she is extremely sorry, just a moment of bad judgment," Mayor Mulder said. The mayor and the city attorney will sit down with some concerned residents Thursday in City Hall for a private meeting about their concerns.
