Is the No. 1 overall seed most likely to win the crown? Who's gone to the most Final Fours? What's a Cinderella team? Find out all you need to know about the NCAA tournament.
Sportscaster Brent Musburger is typically credited as the one who first used the term "March Madness" in relation to the NCAA tournament. Last year Florida became the first team to repeat as national champions since Duke won back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1992. Since 1978, only six teams ranked No. 1 in at least one of the polls entering the tournament have won the championship. UCLA has made the most Final Four trips with 17. Next best is North Carolina (16), Duke (14), Kentucky (13) and Kansas (12). UCLA has won the most NCAA championships (11), followed by Kentucky (7), Indiana (5), North Carolina (4) and Duke (3).
Cinderella: A lower-seeded team that upsets a higher-ranked team. Dark Horse: A team that emerges as an unexpected contender without getting previous consideration. Bracket Buster: When a team favored to advance far into the tournament suffers an upset. At-Large Bid: A team that gets into the tournament by nomination of the selection committee, based on their regular-season performance.
Automatic Bid: A team that qualifies for the NCAA tournament by winning its conference's automatic berth.
