Floyd, ChiSox Blank Struggling Giants

POSTED: 1:23 am EDT May 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - Gavin Floyd combined with four other pitchers in a five-hit shutout as the Chicago White Sox downed the San Francisco Giants, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at AT&T Park.

Alexei Ramirez hit the first home run of his career to provide the only offense of the game. Nick Swisher went 1-for-4 with a run scored for the White Sox, who have won three straight.

Floyd (4-2) gave up four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings of work.

Ray Durham had three hits while Jonathan Sanchez (2-3) got the loss as he gave up two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings of work for the Giants, who have dropped their last three games.

The game was scoreless through the first six innings, but the White Sox grabbed the lead in the seventh. With two outs, Swisher kept the inning alive with a single and Ramirez followed with a blast over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead.

Ehren Wassermann and Boone Logan combined to shut down the Giants in the seventh inning and Scott Linebrink threw a perfect eighth.

Bobby Jenks worked around a one-out double in the ninth to pick up his ninth save of the season.

The Giants had a runner on third in the first inning with no outs as Fred Lewis walked, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by A.J. Pierzynski. However, he was stranded there as the next three batters recorded outs without getting the ball out of the infield.

San Fran had men on first and second with one out in the second, but Jose Castillo hit into a double play to kill the inning.

Game Notes

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy, who has 1,039 career wins as a manager, is one win away from tying Steve O'Neill for 50th all-time...The Giants stranded nine men on base...The White Sox are 105-89 in interleague play...Attendance was 35,482.
