Arroyo Oh Boy-O! Reds Swat Nats

Friday, July 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - Bronson Arroyo earned his second consecutive win as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Washington Nationals 3-0 in the second game of a four-game series at Great American Ball Park.

Arroyo (6-7) pitched six shutout innings, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out three. The right-hander last won two straight starts on May 24 and 28. Francisco Cordero pitched a scoreless ninth, scattering two hits, to earn his 17th save of the year and to help Cincinnati to its fifth win in seven games.

Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 11th home run of the year while Adam Dunn was the only Reds player to record multiple hits, finishing the day 2-for-4.

Jason Bergmann (1-6) got the loss despite a quality start, throwing six innings and allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits while striking out five and walking three. Bergmann has not recorded a win since May 15 despite giving up only six runs in his last four starts.

Dmitri Young reached base in all four of his plate appearances, batting 2- for-2 with two walks for the Nationals, who have lost four of five.

Griffey moved within five home runs of Sammy Sosa with his 604th career homer in the first, giving the Reds an early 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish. Jay Bruce, who doubled, also scored on Griffey's blast.

The Reds scored another run on an error by Elijah Dukes with two outs in the fourth, allowing Paul Bako to score from first.

The Nationals had a good chance to score in the sixth when Young led off the inning with a double, but couldn't cash in on the opportunity. Arroyo immediately induced two groundouts and, after a walk, got Felipe Lopez to pop out to short to leave runners stranded on first and third.

Game Notes

Washington is 12-25 since Ryan Zimmerman last played on May 25...Griffey's homer in the first gave him 5001 total bases for his career, becoming one of 18 major leaguers to accomplish the feat...Christian Guzman's single in the third extended his hitting streak to 12 games...The start of the game was delayed an hour and 47 minutes due to rain.
