Pirates' McLouth Leaves After Being Hit In Face

Sunday, September 7, 2008

(Sports Network) - Pirates center fielder Nate McLouth left in the fourth inning of Pittsburgh's 11-6 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday after being struck in the face by a batted ball.

McLouth dove to try and catch a line drive by Pablo Sandoval with no outs and the bases loaded in the fourth, and Pittsburgh leading 5-0. The ball bounced in front of McLouth and struck him near his left eye, then bounced into left field, allowing all three runners to score. Nyjer Morgan replaced McLouth in center.

The Giants went on to score 10 runs in the fourth, and downed the Pirates 11-6.

The All-Star center fielder had a cut above his left eyebrow after the play which required three stitches.

It was a rough day for McLouth, who was hit by a pitch in the third inning. He went 1-for-2 at the plate, knocked in a run and scored. McLouth is in the midst of a career year, as he is batting .279 with 24 home runs and 83 RBI, all career-highs for the fourth-year player.
