Angels Win Boston Marathon, Stay Alive In ALDS

Monday, October 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Erick Aybar singled in Mike Napoli in the 12th inning to boost the Angels to a 5-4 win over the Red Sox, as Los Angeles remained alive in its American League Division Series.

Francisco Rodriguez, who set a single-season record for saves, escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 10th inning for the Angels, as they broke an 11-game postseason skid against Boston. They still trail the best-of-five series, 2-1, with Game 4 scheduled for Monday night, again at Fenway Park. A deciding Game 5, if necessary, would be Wednesday in Anaheim.

"I think it gives us momentum and makes tomorrow's game really interesting," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "I think we're going to come out and play well."

Napoli homered twice off Josh Beckett, and his single to left field started the 12th inning rally against Javier Lopez (0-1). Howie Kendrick put down a successful sacrifice bunt. Aybar's first hit of the series then came at the perfect time, as the shortstop reached out on an 0-2 pitch to loop the ball into shallow center field, scoring Napoli easily.

"That's what we're looking for," said Aybar. "It's big because we were able to come back. And the pressure, that's what we're looking forward to from here on, and to see the team do it that way, it really means a lot."

Jered Weaver (1-0) walked David Ortiz to start the bottom of the 12th, but Kevin Youkilis flied out to center, Jason Bay struck out, and Alex Cora grounded out sharply to third, ending the 5-hour, 19-minute marathon. It was the longest game in ALDS history.

Chone Figgins had three hits and scored for the Angels, who left 16 men on base, but managed to snap a nine-game postseason slide.

Jacoby Ellsbury was credited with a rare three-run single for the defending World Series champions, who had won their previous nine postseason contests since losing to Cleveland in Game 4 of the 2007 ALCS. Also, Boston's 11 straight postseason wins over the Angels was a major league record for consecutive playoff victories for one team versus a single opponent.

Monday's pitching matchup will be a repeat of the opener as John Lackey takes the mound for the Angels against Jon Lester. Both teams used six pitchers on Sunday.

"I think for both sides starting pitching will be at a premium," said Boston manager Terry Francona. "That's a lot of innings, a lot of baseball from your bullpen."

The Red Sox loaded the bases with two outs off Rodriguez in the bottom of the 10th inning due to a pair of walks and a single from Youkilis. Rodriguez then fell behind 2-0 in the count to Jed Lowrie, but was bailed out when the rookie lined out to right field.

The Angels put two runners on base against Jonathan Papelbon with one out in the 11th inning, but came up empty as Torii Hunter flied out and Gary Matthews Jr. fanned.

Boston had a runner in scoring position in the 11th too, as Coco Crisp singled and stole second, but Dustin Pedroia grounded out sharply to third to end the threat.

Angels starter Joe Saunders was lifted after surrendering five hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings. Beckett, pushed back in the playoff rotation due to a strained right oblique muscle, had six strikeouts while giving up a postseason career-high nine hits along with four runs over five innings.

Beckett walked Juan Rivera with the bases loaded and two outs in the opening inning, but then got Napoli to ground into a force play.

A two-out fielding blunder led to three runs for the Red Sox in the second. They loaded the bases on walks to Lowrie and Crisp and a single from Jason Varitek. On a full count, Ellsbury lofted a fly ball to shallow center field. Second baseman Kendrick and center fielder Hunter never communicated on who would catch the ball, which landed in between the players for a three-run single.

Vladimir Guerrero doubled leading off the third and scored on Napoli's two-out homer off the light tower above the Green Monster, tying the game 3-3.

"We're going up there trying to get a tough at-bat every time," said Napoli. "It so happens tonight we just came through."

The Angels wasted a bases-loaded opportunity in the fourth, when Hunter's broken-bat grounder up the middle was gobbled up by Pedroia, who flipped to Lowrie for the force out at second.

Napoli ripped a 1-0 pitch from Beckett over the wall in left with one out in the fifth to give the Angels the lead again, but the Red Sox tied the game in the bottom half thanks to doubles from Ellsbury and Youkilis, the latter being a two-out shot to center.

Ellsbury walked leading off the bottom of the seventh, but became the second out when he slid too hard after stealing second base. Ellsbury was tagged out by Kendrick, and after Ortiz walked Scot Shields struck out Youkilis.

The top of the ninth inning also had some interesting moments. Hunter led off with a hit down the left field line, but was thrown out at second base. Napoli's bat split in half on a grounder for the final out, but the bat whizzed over the head of reliever Justin Masterson.

Shields retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Game Notes

Napoli's third-inning homer snapped a stretch of 50 consecutive homerless innings by Red Sox hurlers in Division Series play...Papelbon extended his career post-season scoreless run to 19 2/3 innings in 12 games, the second- most career playoff innings without allowing a run behind 20 innings for Joe Niekro...Ortiz's 13-game Division Series hitting streak was snapped...Boston's J.D. Drew didn't start due to a lingering back injury, but he struck out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth...Pedroia is hitless in 13 at-bats in the series and is currently mired in an 0-for-16 postseason slump dating back to the 2007 World Series.
