Cardinals Organization Member George Kissell Passes Away

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - George Kissell, who had been a member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization since 1940, passed away late Tuesday night due to injuries he sustained in a car accident. He was 88.

"The entire St. Louis Cardinals organization is deeply saddened today having learned of the unfortunate passing of George Kissell," said Cardinals' chairman/CEO Bill DeWitt, Jr. "We will be forever grateful to George for having taught so many of our players the 'Cardinal Way' both on and off the field. We offer our most sincere thoughts and prayers to George's wife, Virginia, and his entire family during this difficult time."

Kissell died at Tampa General Hospital, Pinellas Park Police Captain Sanfield Foreseth said. Police said Kissell's daughter was driving her parents Monday night when she apparently ran a red light and was hit by another car.

He was transferred to the hospital with life-threatening injuries while his daughter was treated at the hospital and later released. Kissell's wife was also a passenger in the car and was treated at the scene.

From 1946 to 1968, Kissell worked in the Cardinals organization as a manager, coach, scout and minor league instructor. He was a member of the Cardinals coaching staff from 1969 to 1975 and served as a special assistant to general manager Bing Devine in 1976. He was currently serving as senior field coordinator for player development with St. Louis.
