Royals Round Out Coaching Staff

Monday, October 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals filled out their six-person coaching staff on Monday, naming Kevin Seitzer hitting coach and former Toronto skipper John Gibbons bench coach.

As a result of the hires, some shuffling of current staff took place. Former bench coach Dave Owen will become the third-base coach of manager Trey Hillman's staff, and former third-base coach Luis Silverio will stay in the organization as special assistant to player development.

Silverio and former hitting coach Mike Barnett were not given contracts to remain on staff.

Hillman's pitching coach Bob McClure, first-base coach Rusty Kuntz and bullpen coach John Mizerock will keep their roles.

Seitzer was with the Royals for six of his 12 seasons as a player, from 1986-1991, and was named to the American League All-Star team in '87. His only other coaching experience came in the first half of 2007, when he was Arizona's hitting coach before being fired.

Gibbons, meanwhile, managed the Blue Jays for parts of five seasons, compiling a 305-305 record before being fired this past June.
