Monday, September 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - Tampa Bay Rays infielder Ben Zobrist and Texas Rangers infielder Hank Blalock earned a share of the top player honor in the American League for the final week of the season.

Zobrist hit .455 down the stretch for the AL East champion Rays. He added four multi-hit performances during the span, ending the campaign by going 7-for-15 with four home runs and seven RBI in a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers.

It was the first weekly award for the 28-year-old.

Blalock posted a .400 average for the week with four home runs and nine runs batted in, also compiling a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .444 on-base mark. The 27-year-old slugger homered in five consecutive games from September 21-26, and finished an injury-plagued season batting .287 with 12 homers and 38 RBI in 65 games.

Blalock also earned his first career weekly honor.

Other players netting consideration were Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis (.412, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 2 2B); Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells (.400, 3 HR, 9 RBI) and Royals starter Gil Meche (2-0, 2.25 ERA, 11 K in 12 innings).
