Rays, Angels Hope To Resume Key Set In Wake Of Storm
(Sports Network) - Tropical Storm Fay could be the only thing that slows down the upstart Tampa Bay Rays at this point. Weather permitting, the Rays will play the second of three matchups with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tonight at Tropicana Field. The storm, which could become a hurricane, is expected to hit Florida's Gulf Coast at some point on Tuesday, putting tonight's game as well as Wednesday's finale in jeopardy. A final decision on tonight's contest will be made at some point Tuesday afternoon. However, everything was fine inside the domed Trop on Monday, when Eric Hinske and Cliff Floyd each hit two-run homers to help Tampa Bay to a 6-4 win over the Angels, the team with the best record in all of baseball. Both Tampa and the Angels have won a major league-best 76 games this season, but the Rays have one more loss than the AL West leaders. Willy Aybar finished 3-for-4 and scored two runs for the Rays, who have won eight of their last 10 games and own a 4 1/2-game lead over Boston in the AL East standings. Andy Sonnanstine (13-6), who leads the Rays' staff in wins, gave up three runs on five hits over 5 1/3 frames to get the victory. Dan Wheeler pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save. Juan Rivera homered and added a sacrifice fly for Los Angeles, which has dropped four of its last five contests but still holds a 15-game lead in the AL West. Vladimir Guerrero had two hits and knocked in a run for the Angels, while Garret Anderson had an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. Jon Garland (11-8) took the loss after he allowed five runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits over six innings. Heading to the hill tonight for Tampa will be right-hander James Shields, who is 10-7 with a 3.75 ERA. Shields did not get a decision on Thursday in Oakland, as he allowed four runs and five hits in five innings of his team's 7-6 win. Shields is 1-1 against the Halos this season and 3-2 lifetime against them with a 3.40 ERA in six starts. Anaheim will counter with All-Star righty Ervin Santana, who is 13-5 with a 3.49 ERA. Santana did not factor in the decision of his team's 10-7 loss to Seattle on Wednesday, when the Mariners reached him for three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Santana has faced the Rays seven times over the course of his career and is 3-3 with a 6.21 ERA. Tampa Bay has won five of its seven games with the Angels this season.
