Rays Replace Hinske With Pitcher For ALCS

Friday, October 10, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays have left veteran Eric Hinske off their roster for the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox.

Manager Joe Maddon has decided to carry 11 pitchers instead, replacing Hinske with Edwin Jackson.

Hinske was on the roster, but did not get to the plate against the Chicago White Sox during Tampa Bay's 3-1 series victory in the American League Division Series. Hinske finished with 20 home runs and 60 RBI in 133 games for the Rays during the regular season.

The 31-year-old Hinske appeared in one game and failed to get a hit in his one at-bat for Boston during the 2007 postseason.

Jackson was 14-11 with a 4.42 earned run average during the regular season. He appeared in 32 games, including 31 starts, and worked 183 1/3 innings. The 25- year-old right-hander has never pitched in the playoffs and is expected to work out of the Rays' bullpen for the series.
