Hairstylists Would Wear Lingerie At N.H. Barbershop

Tuesday, April 25, 2006 – updated: 1:20 pm EDT April 25, 2006

A business idea that is turning heads is about to go in front of the planning board in Salem, reported WMUR-TV in Manchester.

A man from Tewksbury, Mass., wants to open a barbershop where the female hairstylists would wear lingerie. Men would be able to set up appointments with their favorite stylist and even choose what they wear.

Neighbors are not happy with the idea. "Anybody who really needed a haircut wouldn't go to a place like this," Mary-Francis Labrecque said.

"This is strictly about cutting hair and marketing," developer and "Paradise Cuts" owner Peter Carlino said. "You've got girls who wear less clothing on a daily basis than the girls who will be cutting hair."

The barbershop would be built behind the Brooks Pharmacy on Main Street. An ice cream parlor and school are in close proximity.

The Salem planning board is taking a close look at the business plans, which are complete with photos giving examples of what the women would be wearing.

If the board decides that it is a "sexually oriented" business, regulations could prevent the shop from opening. "If they were in some state of nudity, for example, it would be considered a sexually oriented business," Salem planning director Russ Moldoff said.

The planning board will consider the "Paradise Cuts'" proposal at a meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m.
