Heat Close Season With Win Over Hawks

POSTED: 1:51 am EDT April 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jason Williams led seven Heat players in double figures with 17 points, as Miami avoided setting a franchise record for losses in a season with a 113-99 victory over the playoff-bound Atlanta Hawks at American Airlines Arena.

Daequan Cook and Mark Blount scored 16 apiece, and Ricky Davis added 15 for Miami (15-67), which equaled the dubious mark set by the 1988-89 Heat in the franchise's inaugural season. Earl Barron scored 13 to go with six rebounds, and Stephane Lasme added 12 for the Heat, who snapped a three-game losing streak by outscoring Atlanta 58-38 in the second half.

"It's a great feeling leaving on a positive note," Davis said.

Josh Smith led Atlanta (37-45) with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Mike Bibby had 17 points and five assists. The Hawks, having already secured the Eastern Conference's eighth and final seed, finished just 12-29 on the road for the season and will have the difficult task of facing the top-seeded Boston Celtics in the opening round of the postseason beginning on Sunday.

"These games don't matter," Hawks guard Joe Johnson said, dismissing the Atlanta's season-ending three-game skid. "We've accomplished our goal and these last two games...just throw them in the bag and don't even worry about them. We just have to be ready and get up for the playoffs."

Atlanta led 30-24 at the end of the first, but Miami climbed back to tie the game at 50 on a Blount jumper with less than three minutes to go before the half. Six unanswered Hawks points before the break gave them a 61-55 edge.

An 8-0 run early in the third had Miami up 66-63, and the Heat led by as many as seven on their way to an 89-83 lead going to the fourth.

Atlanta was back within two on a Marvin Williams jumper with 7:37 left, but Miami used a 13-3 sprint capped by Cook's three-ball to claim a 106-94 cushion, and cruised to a relatively smooth finish from there.
