Skeleton Unearthed In Orlando After Tip From Homeless Person

Posted: 6:17 pm EDT October 5, 2006Updated: 6:22 pm EDT October 5, 2006

A tip from a homeless person led Orlando police to human remains and mystery buried in a wooded area. The bones were found off John Young Parkway and W.D. Judge in Orange County.

It's a mystery that could involve murder. Orlando detectives found the skeletal remains after a tip from a homeless person that a dog had found a human bone. They organized a large scale dig and unearthed an entire skeleton.

"Once we figure out who the person is and we backtrack the circumstances of the disappearance, we'll be able to determine better what may have caused them to be buried in the woods," said Sgt. Rich Ring, Orlando Police Department.

The shallow grave was right next to a homeless camp, but detectives don't know whether that has anything to do with the crime. They said the remains were too old to be those of Jennifer Kesse, but not old enough to be ancient Native American remains.

"Anytime you have skeletal remains, you have a limited amount of evidence and any cases like this you're always suspicious the person was murdered," Ring said.

It will be up to the medical examiner and a forensic anthropologist to figure that out. A UCF professor will look at the pelvis and skull to determine the person's sex, race and age at time of death. He'll also try to figure out how long the bones were buried. Detectives bagged the entire gravesite, hoping for any clues.

"We'll check the NCIC database and see if we have some type of dental records. We'll go through DNA records and go through everything to find out who the person is," Ring said.

It is a crime to bury someone in Florida without reporting the death. Preliminary reports show that the remains are female, but it could be several weeks before the anthropologist's final report is finished.
