Disturbance At Pub Sparks Chase In Longwood

Tuesday, October 31, 2006 – updated: 9:04 am EST October 31, 2006

A man was in jail Tuesday morning after leading a Seminole County deputy on an overnight chase on SR-434 near Range Line Road in Longwood. Police stopped him using a controversial technique called a pit maneuver.

One of the patrons of Kerryman’s Pub was involved in a disturbance. Deputies said he threatened to go to his car and grab a gun. He walked to his car then sped away.

When the driver of the car refused to pull over on SR-434 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Longwood, a Seminole County deputy decided to move in with the precision immobilization technique called a pit maneuver

"It's not a maneuver where you crash into it. You simply make very light contact and then a quarter turn of the vehicle will cause it to spin out, go into reverse and stall," said Lt. Don Rufo of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

The car then came up over the curb. Deputies said the driver got out and immediately lay on the ground with his arms out.

Deputies said the driver didn't have any warrants or a suspended license. They think he was trying to flee for other reasons.

"We searched the vehicle and recovered two firearms that were loaded with rounds in the chamber," added Rufo.

The driver was taken to the Seminole County jail. He has been charged with aggravated assault for the incident at the pub. He's facing a fleeing and eluding charge as well.
